Cheddar Popover

These pretties are called popovers because they do pop over the tin during baking process. From what I read on wikipedia, Americans addapted the recipe from British's Yorkshire pudding.


They look really similar to muffin, but once you have a bite, you'll know the difference. Compared with muffins, popovers use more eggs in the batter, are baked in higher temperature, and take around 30 to 45 minutes (sometimes longer) to bake. Just like muffins, popovers can also be served as dessert (sweet) or with another meal (savory).


Cheddar Popover

Ingredients:
  • 2 eggs, warm 10 minutes in 1 C (240ml) hot water
  • 3/4 C (180ml) lukewarm milk/ coconut milk
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 C (90gr) all purpose flour
  • 1/4 C gratted cheddar cheese
  • 2 Tbsp butter (melted)
Instructions:
  • Beat eggs, milk, & salt well
  • Add flour and cheese, beat again until smooth and not lumpy (you can use electric mixer for 30 minutes to make a really smooth batter)
  • Add melted butter, stir until well blended. 
  • Pour into greased popovers/muffin tins until 3/4 full
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 450°F, lower the temperature to 350°F and continue baking for another 10 minutes.

Note:
For dessert popovers, omit cheese and salt, add vanilla extract in the batter.  Serve with whipped cream or ice cream and fresh fruits.

Hidangan dengan bahan sederhana ini dinamakan popover karena memang ia pop over the tin (mengembang melebihi wadahnya) saat dipanggang. Menurut Wikipedia, popover ini diadaptasi orang Amerika dari resep Yorkshire pudding khas British. 

Sepintas popover memang mirip muffin. Perbedaannya, popover menggunakan lebih banyak telur, suhu panggangnya lebih tinggi dan waktu panggangnya lebih lama dari muffin. Persamaannya, popovers juga bisa disajikan asin (sebagai pendamping menu lain) atau manis (sebagai dessert).

Bahan-bahan:
  • 2 butir telur, rendam 10 menit di 1 C (240ml) air panas
  • 3/4 C (180ml) susu/santan hangat kuku
  • 1/4 sdt garam
  • 3/4 C (90gr) terigu serba guna
  • 1/4 C keju cheddar diparut halus
  • 2 sdm mentega/margarin, dicairkan
Cara membuat:
  • Kocok telur, susu/santan, & garam sampai benar-benar rata.
  • Tuang tepung & keju parut, kocok lagi sampai rata tidak bergerindil (atau dimixer speed tinggi 30 detik saja).
  • Tuang mentega cair, aduk rata.
  • Tuang adonan ke loyang popover/loyang muffin bersemir mentega sampai 3/4 bagian.
  • Panggang di rak tengah di 220°C selama 20 menit, turunkan suhu ke 160° dan lanjutkan memang 10 menit lagi.
  • Sajikan hangat (bisa dengan sosis panggang, tumis daging cincang, cream soup, atau dimakan begitu saja)
Jadi 7 popovers sedang

Note:
Kalau mau popover yang disajikan sebagai dessert, tidak usah pakai keju dan garam di adonannya, & beri sedikit vanilla extract. Setelah matang, bisa disajikan dengan whipped cream, es krim, dan buah segar.
